JOSEPH C. NEWMAN JR.

NEWPORT NEWS – On Friday, June 7, 1996, our beloved son, husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, friend and loved one Joseph Conway Newman Jr. entered eternal rest and peace in the Hampton VA Medical Center, Hampton.

A native of Maryland, he was the son of Mary Helen Newman and the late Joseph Conway Newman Sr. Joe, as he was lovingly called, was a Catholic, and a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army with 20 years’ service, including Vietnam. He was predeceased by his sister, Juanita Newman.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Cynthia Newman of Newport News; four sons, Joseph C. Newman III of Hampton and Keith L. Newman, Antonio C. Newman and Lamar S. Newman, all of Newport News; two grandchildren, Marquis Jones of Newport News and Breanna Newman of Hampton; his daughter-in-law, Keisha Newman of Hampton; his godchild, Felicia Johnson of Brandywine, Md.; five sisters, Regina Gray of Upper Marlboro, Md., Gloria Jean Negron and Bernadette Swann, both of Orlando, Fla., Ann Evans of Akron, Ohio, and Cherry Adams of Forestville, Md.; three brothers, Melvin Newman of Lanham, Md., James F. Newman Sr. of Killeen, Texas, and Nathan Newman of Waldorf, Md.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

Viewing will be at Greene Funeral Home at 814 Franklin St., Alexandria, on Thursday, June 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. Graveside services will be Friday, June 14, at 11 a.m. in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington.

Metropolitan Funeral Service, Norfolk, is in charge.
