CONSTANCE L. BINNS

Constance Lunt Binns, age 92, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, in Newport News after a brief illness. Born in Bronxville, N.Y., October 3, 1907, she spend much of her life in her beloved New England.

Miss Binns worked as a children’s librarian in the Harlem branch of the New York Public Library, and later entered an Episcopal religious order in Boston, the Society of Saint Margaret, where she served as a teacher and ran children’s camps. In her retirement, she moved to Cape Cod and made a home with her companion, Margaret Shrader, with whom she spent 20 years raising Kerry blue terriers and participating in a cottage industry making shell ornaments.

In 1993, Miss Binns moved to Williamsburg, thence to Yorktown. She spent the final four years of her life as a resident at Regency Health Care Center. In addition to her companion, she is survived by her niece, Mrs. Andrew Pickens Johnson of Wayland, Mass.

A memorial service, including Holy Eucharist, will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 11, at Grace Episcopal Church, Yorktown, with the Rev. Carleton B. Bakkum and the Rev. Dr. Wayne Price officiating. Burial will follow in the churchyard.
