GEORGE F. EMERY JR.

George F. Emery Jr., an award winning architect and artist, died at his home in Gloucester, Va. on Friday, Aug. 24, 2007. He was 64. Mr. Emery was born in Columbia, Tenn. and spent his formative years in Yorktown, Va. where his father worked as assistant superintendent of the Yorktown Battlefield. He graduated from Walsingham Academy in 1960 and, in 1965, from the University of Virginia with a degree in Architecture.

Mr. Emery practiced architecture and left his talented mark around the world. His representative works included several residential and municipal buildings in St. Croix, U.S.V.I., including the design of the Island’s police headquarters. In New York City, as principal and chief designer of MLA Associates, Mr. Emery directed the design of Nike Incorporated’s Manhattan sales and marketing center, the Atrium Fashion Center on Seventh Avenue and the restoration of Central Park’s Wollman Ring. While practicing in Washington, DC with the architectural and engineering firm, TAMS Consultants, Mr. Emery, as associate and principal architect directed the design of Fairfax County’s Huntley Meadows Park Boardwalk, the National Mall Master Plan and Freer Gallery Site Improvements and the National Mall’s World War II Memorial. Most notably, while with TAMS, Mr. Emery specialized in airport design contributing to the creation of the Macau International Airport, the New Bangkok International Airport and the Continental Airlines Global Gateway Terminal at Newark International Airport.

He was a member of the American Institute of Architects and the University of Virginia Alumni Association. He also lectured in his field at the University of Virginia.

Mr. Emery enjoyed several hobbies. Sailing, painting and playing his banjo were among his favorites. His works of art have been exhibited at the Washington Arts Club and galleries in New England and Virginia.

Mr. Emery is survived by his wife, Marcelina, of Gloucester; his daughter, Georgia Emery Gray of Washington, DC and his step-daughter, Catarina Castela of Australia. Other survivors include his sister, Ann Emery Shirey, of Washington, DC; a son-in-law, Robert Gray and his nephew, David Shirey.

A service celebrating Mr. Emery’s life will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 30 at Grace Episcopal Church in Yorktown.
